Session 07-Wrapping Up With Horror
Summary
You cleaned off the remains of the bookworms and exited the repaired book using the same rune pattern with your library cards as you had used to enter it, only in reverse. Horror met you upon return with great enthusiasm and your success has inspired him to be braver in his search for the mimic infestation. The tortle monk Teacher cleared the cave rubble and revealed the cause of the cave-in was an unfortunate reader. You found some gold and gems on the body, and then Young Adult explored a very narrow, twisty passage of the cave that led to the successful (getting unstuck with Horror's help) retrieval of a glimmering purple crystal cluster with unknown magical properties.
You left the cave, picked up Jenny from the cemetery, and made your way back through the rotunda to the Information Desk where you turned in the book as test #1's proof of your fighting skills. Crinkle was very proud of you, claiming you set a new time record and are all best friends now, but was upset that the other group had finished before you and argued with d'Ehp'd'Hop about it. Crinkle and Seshat filled in the last pieces of your basic librarian instruction: cards are stored on shelves near the information desk, you each have new compasses for locating books with the cards, and you were taught how to pull items and creatures from books with the skill "Look to the Books". You each were also given a belt (unstylish, purely servicible) that can hold 2 books at a time for easy access. Seshat led Jenny away to a restricted area to bring her to the Pagemaster himself, as a book-character who is sentient enough to want to become a librarian is not normal.
Beside the desk, Snailrag was communicating his condolences with what turned out to be Snappy's mother, with her children tagging along. You all were kind and respectful, and even inspiring to "Ma Grump" and her kids with Thashallot's kind words, Thistle's music, and Gouda even found little toddler Gooey who had wandered off and was pretending to play chess. She gifted you with a Ring of Warmth that she said used to be Snappy's, and a Gem of Brightness (25 charges). You then took supper at the Bound Bean Cafe, where the other librarian group was also eating, but did not interact with them except for Thistle narrowly avoiding a collision at the counter. You ate hearty meals of stew and the four that could drink tested the beer of the day with some cursed but temporary effects. You discussed the best plan of action for your second test: finding 5 misshelved books and returning them to where they belong. In order to help map it out, you tested your compasses in the rotunda and now have an idea of where you will need to go. Lastly for the evening you turned in at the inn The Checkout, opting for servicible and modest rooms and turning in for a long rest, while Gouda read Young Adult for an hour to recover her health, too. Not needing sleep, Young Adult returned to her section in the Library, successfully avoiding a reshelving cart.
Notes
Thistle's Journal:
When I came to the library this morning I did not really expect to be deputized as a librarian, but I think this will suit my goals. I did want access to the books to see if I can sort something out after all.
First day as a librarian has been quite eventful! Met with a chap named Rollie who has ended up a sweet adventuring companion, and two half-orc sisters who... are less so, but certainly can wield their weapons with aplomb. Also perhaps most strange, a talking personification of a book genre has joined the party as well. Not anything of the sort I'd read before; interesting, though. Many tales of struggles and despair but also heroism and romance it seems? I shall have to look into them further for sure, could be quite the inspiration for my own tales.
Beyond those who seem to be my peers, that inspector chased me here as well. A nice orc lady helped me out when he tried to arrest me, and instead he's unfortunately also joined our librarian aspirants collective.
The senior librarians seem like an interesting bunch: a mute goblin, Snailrag, a talkative kenku (though aren't they always I suppose), Crinkle, some sort of frog person... a grung? d'Ehp'd'Hop I believe. Sphynx head librarian, Seshat. And we met another book, Horror, while completing our first test. Along with a lady who is a character from a book herself, Jenny. She has a lovely green ribbon.
Alas, I did not get to make any progress on my own research today, but perhaps after our second test tomorrow and officially becoming a librarian. I suppose I am not in a rush. I'm not really sure what I can find or even quite what I am looking for. Just hoping I can stumble across something like that place of the mists.
