Session 18-A Good Ole Adventure
Summary
You left the rotunda's chaos behind and began your adventure into the Adventure section. First you found a note on one of the reshelving carts that Adventure himself is out and will be back soon. Turning right, you entered a training area where, under the guidance of a small training doll whose voice, advice, and accessories alternated through various mentor-figures of literature, honed your skills of survival, history and arcana to an advantage over the traps you might encounter. You also found a treasure chest behind some bookshelves. Thashallot took the doll on a spiked shoulder when leaving the area, although it is no longer animate. The left path took you into a maze of bookshelves, traps, ladders, vines and tunnels. Gouda and Thashallot almost took down a wooden gate blocking the way forward, Rollie unfortunately missed a landing when jumping between shelves but Gouda helped catch him, and Thistle and Young Adult followed a tunnel and found a second treasure chest behind some brambles that turned out to be a mimic, which de-personified Young Adult in the battle. You all took a short rest to read aloud Young Adult to the group, then carefully made your way along the tops of the bookshelves disarming traps, found Thashallot's book and two more chests, one of which was trapped with poison and the other which had loot. You think it may be a good idea to bring the armor of acid resistance to the blacksmith to make some armor sized for Young Adult.
Notes
- Adventure is not in his section or at least not easily found, there's a note near the beginning that says he is 'off adventuring' with a fork and one side leading to a 'training room' and one leading to an area described as 'full of traps'
- We poke around and find a room for explaining traps that has a bunch of traps in it and a beat-up looking doll
- Rollie and Thashallot are interested in the doll, but when Rollie picks it up he finds its one gold eye glows and it starts yelling at him to put it down
- when he does it starts telling us it'll train us, but also keeps cycling through various costumes and voices and says it'll take 2 years to learn all it knows (4 languages, various fighting styles, things about traps, etc)
- we all read some info for a bit and most of us find ourselves imbued with fresh knowledge about traps that will benefit us in the area to come (Gouda - Survival, Shallot - History & Arcana, YA - History and Arcana, Thistle - Arcana, Rollie - sadly nothing)
- before we leave Rollie picks up the doll again, hoping it'll be a talkative companion but it fades as we leave the training area
- Shallot says if he doesn't want it anymore she does and sticks it on her shoulder spikes
- she also notices there's a vine that might lead to treasure, and she and Thistle go up and indeed find some treasure (bracer, gold, dagger)
- we head into the trapped area and our heightened senses immediately pick up a trap that Gouda swiftly disarms before YA can step on it
- we start continuing through but Rollie gets separated a different way and is nearly spiked by a wall trap
- the rest of us pass by a pipe and also a pit trap to find a fence that Gouda and Shallot try to break down but it's a bit too sturdy
- Rollie manages to get up on top of the shelves and thinks he knows where the group is but tries to jump across the shelves and nearly falls into the pit trap
- Gouda saves him by knocking him across but they both only barely manage to not fall in the trap and Rollie takes a not insignificant amount of damage from falling from the top of the 30ft bookshelves
- meanwhile Thistle and YA explored the pipe and found what they thought was a treasure chest but turned out to be a mimic
- Initiative: YA (22), Thistle (21), Gouda (11), Mimic (8), Shallot (6), Rollie (5)
- Thistle uses message to alert Gouda that we're potentially in trouble but while YA did a significant amount of damage, she's take out by the mimic before they arrive
- the rest arrive and hack down a thorn barrier between them and the mimic and between all of us we swiftly take out the mimic
- deciding we should take a short rest to revive YA and perhaps regain some HP for party members who need it, Thistle reads YA aloud to the rest of the group which gives everyone the Song of Rest bonus and with everyone listening attentively she regains 4 HP instead of the usual 1 after the hour of reading.
- Gouda suggests we take the vine up to the top of the shelves and avoid most of the ground traps and we make our way towards where Shallot's book compass is pointing
- we find a couple more traps along the way that we disarm, fetch Shallot's book with ease, and then spy a chest
- Thistle is pretty sure it is not arcanely trapped and it does not seem to respond like another mimic, but before he tries to open it, Gouda stops him recognizing there's a more mundane trap at work and dispatches it, picking up a vial of poison for her trouble
- Rollie meanwhile spies another chest and finds inside that one 50g, some armor that has acid resistance, and a bottle of smoke
- we'd earlier kind of jokingly suggested we needed to get YA some book armor, but think perhaps we can in fact turn this armor into book armor if we speak to Pyre
